Getting to Second Base
By Neil Mason

There were many great presentations at the eMetrics Summit in Washington, DC, a couple weeks ago. There were presentations on all aspects of Web analytics, from strategic implications of developing a Web measurement program to the use of advanced analytical techniques to address specific issues.

One of the most interesting presentations I saw wasn’t about Web analytics at all, however. It wasn’t about the Web or even about analytics. It was about customers and customer centricity. It was about putting customers at the heart of the organization and what that really means for your business. It was pretty thought-provoking stuff from David Rance of Round. More...

Web Analytics: Industry Trends
By Jason Burby

Last week, I attended eMetrics in Washington, DC. It’s a must-attend vent [sic] for those looking to see what others are doing in the Web analytics space, as well as an opportunity to talk to others who are passionate about this stuff. This year’s conference title was "The Big Picture: Optimizing Online Marketing Value." It was larger than any of the past conferences. More...

Analytics Staffing
By Shane Atchison

Nowadays, most companies spend the greatest proportion of their Web analysis budgets on technology. But at spring’s eMetrics Summit, Intuit’s Avinash Kaushik noted: “Spending on Web analytics applications should be a fraction of Web decision making budgets: We should take spending away from vendors and pour it into people to analyze the data.” More...

“So you’re going to the Summit, right?”
By Robbin Steif

I have an incredibly selfish reason for wanting everyone to go to the eMetrics Summit, Oct. 16-18 in DC. It’s not money (I don’t work for Jim Sterne); it’s not personal aggrandizement (by the time I speak at the end of Day Three, everyone will be gone but me); it’s not even business development. No -- I just want to see all my friends. More...

Blogchat with Jim Sterne, CEO Target Marketing
By Neil Mason

“Somebody once introduced me as the Godfather of Web Analytics and I think that’s the most apt description of my involvement. I was *not* there at the conception, nor the birth, but I am decidedly and vigorously interested in its well being.

“Where is the industry today? The technology is now at that adolescent stage. It is powerful enough to overwhelm those who want to use it and very useful for those who understand how to control it, but not mature enough yet to help the majority of companies get lots and lots of work done. Only those with clear goals, have a good handle on change management and have hired or contracted smart people with previous experience are at the top of the class today.” More...

Customer-Centric Web Analytics
By Neil Mason

I’m moderating a track called "The Voice of the Customer," and there’s a great line up of speakers, including my fellow ClickZ columnist Jason Burby from Zaaz.

I’m really pleased this is happening. If you regularly read my columns, you know I believe Web analytics is too site-centric and not customer centric enough. In other words, people focus too much on site analysis, rather than on analyzing the people who are trying to use the site.

The inclusion of this track in the eMetrics summit means we’ll get exposure on some of the issues, challenges, and opportunities of working with surveys and other customer data sources alongside the data collected from Web analytics systems. I’m looking forward to it. More...
